Fans of Ranma ½ are very familiar with the manga series and the anime it spawned. But for most fans, or at least fans outside of Japan, that is where their familiarity ends. New doors are opened with the world of Ranma ½ video games. But with the exception of a few fighting games on the Super Nintendo and a translated emulation of an RPG for the Super Famicom, most of these gems remained untranslated and lost to time stored on obscure consoles.
One example of such is "Ranma ½: Byakuran Aika", which translates to "Ranma ½: White Orchid Serenade". Released for the Sega Mega CD add-on in Japan in 1993, this game was a visual novel in which players advanced the story by selecting the right dialogue choices and, in the style of Alex Kidd, used rock-paper-scissor battles (albeit with Japanese text instead of actual hand gestures) to determine the outcome of Ranma's fights. It offered a new and original story to the series and introduced two new characters: Arisa Nanjo and Kukuto Futae. This game could very easily have been the third Ranma movie, yet it has never gained the recognition it deserves.
As best I can tell, at the time of my writing this (February 19th 2016), the internet is near completely devoid of information on this video game. Neither the Ranma Wiki article on either the game itself or Arisa Nanjo contains a detailed synopsis of the events of the game's storyline or characters. Furinkan.com also says very little about it. Even on Youtube, most gameplay videos seem to end after the first few minutes.
Fortunately for me, I have the game and the necessary hardware to play it. During a holiday back in the early 90s, my grandmother purchased a Japanese Sega Mega Drive as a gift for my sister and I, not knowing it wouldn't be compatible with PAL games or even our 240V electrical outlets. Of course we later got a PAL Mega Drive, but the NTSC-J one that our grandmother bought us sat in the garage still in its original packaging and waited there for over two decades. Now it's day has come. I have acquired a Japanese Sega Mega Drive and the necessary cables to power them here, and of course the Ranma game itself. In addition, I have also imported an RGB SCART cable and SCART to HDMI adapter for optimum viewing and easy capture with my Elgato Game Capture HD.
RGB SCART to HDMI is by the best picture quality that you can get out of a Sega Mega Drive and Sega Mega CD combo. Unfortunately, I don't have a Sega 32X, which I am told further improves the picture quality through RGB SCART. But for what it is, I think it looks great. Now for the first time, Ranma fans worldwide have the rare opportunity to observe this rare gem and new entry to the Ranma ½ series , in glorious Full HD
